Dr. Mireille Boisse, DVM

A native Californian, I was raised in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley. From an early age, I knew I wanted to become a veterinarian. With the unwavering support of my parents, I frequently brought home stray and injured animals, driven by a deep concern for their safety and well-being. That early passion has shaped the course of my life and career.

During my undergraduate years, I worked as a veterinary nurse and laboratory technician, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. My final nursing position was at a busy 24-hour emergency clinic, where I developed a strong clinical foundation and practical skill set that would guide me throughout my career.

After earning my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1995, I began working as a relief veterinarian in a variety of hospital and animal shelter settings. In 1999, I permanently relocated to San Diego County. Early in my career, I recognized that emergency medicine and end-of-life care were among the most challenging — yet most essential — aspects of veterinary practice. Through these experiences, I gained a deeper understanding of complex illnesses, traumatic injuries, and quality-of-life considerations.

Equally important, I developed a profound appreciation for compassionate communication. Having witnessed many different clinical scenarios and family experiences, I learned the importance of openly discussing foreseeable options with pet owners. Establishing trust and rapport is paramount in facilitating transparent, candid conversations about therapeutic choices for family members who cannot speak for themselves.

Education and counseling are central to my approach. I believe that, together, we can determine the most compassionate and appropriate path forward. It is deeply important to me that families leave discussions feeling informed, supported, and as close to fully confident as possible in the decisions they make.

The decline of a beloved pet’s quality of life — whether due to illness, trauma, or the natural progression of age — is an inevitable and heartbreaking reality. When that quality significantly diminishes, difficult decisions must often be faced. As cherished family members and loyal companions, our pets depend on us to ease their suffering when the time comes. For more than 20 years, I have been honored to guide and support families through the delicate and emotional process of euthanasia, ensuring a peaceful and gentle transition for their beloved companions.

Why Telemedicine

As a veterinarian, my career has always centered on accessibility, compassion, and thoughtful guidance during both routine and urgent moments. Over time, I began to recognize that many families struggle to access timely veterinary support. Busy schedules, mobility limitations, anxious pets, transportation challenges, and geographic distance can all create barriers to care. In some situations, pet owners simply need trusted guidance before deciding whether an in-person visit is necessary.

Telemedicine offers a meaningful solution to these challenges.

By starting a telemedicine practice, I can provide convenient, real-time access to professional advice and medical insight from the comfort of a pet’s home. For many pets, especially seniors, those with chronic illnesses, or those who experience significant stress during travel, avoiding a clinic visit can make a tremendous difference in their overall well-being.

Telemedicine Also Allows:

Early intervention. Addressing concerns quickly can prevent minor issues from becoming major ones.

Chronic disease monitoring. Ongoing conditions such as arthritis, allergies, or dermatologic issues can often be evaluated through virtual follow-ups.

Behavior consultations. Discussing environmental factors in the home can be especially valuable when assessing behavior concerns.

Quality-of-life discussions. Sensitive conversations about aging or end-of-life care can sometimes feel more comfortable in a familiar setting.

Equally important, telemedicine strengthens communication. It creates an opportunity for thoughtful, unrushed conversations where pet owners can ask questions, share observations, and feel supported in decision-making. While telemedicine does not replace hands-on examinations or emergency care, it serves as a complementary extension of veterinary services — bridging gaps and improving continuity of care. At its heart, starting a telemedicine practice reflects a commitment to meeting families where they are — both physically and emotionally. It expands access, reduces stress for pets, and provides pet owners with trusted guidance when they need it most.

Outside of My Professional Life

I enjoy traveling and spending time with my partner, Enzo, and our two children, Vicente and Furianna. Our home is also shared with a lively extended animal family: Venus, a mastiff mix; Amelie, Tycho, and Leo, our mischievous cats; Joli, a 30-year-old umbrella cockatoo; two tortoises; and a vibrant community of koi fish.
